What is the Folds of Honor Foundation?
The Folds of Honor Foundation is a nonprofit organization providing educational scholarships to families of those killed or disabled while in service to our nation. Since 2007, the Folds of Honor Foundation has awarded over 16,000 scholarships, with 13,600 scholarships, totaling over $5 million, awarded to families in North Carolina.
Folds of Honor Foundation History
In 2006, Major Dan Rooney, an F-16 fighter pilot who served three tours in Iraq, was a passenger on a commercial airline flight from Chicago to Grand Rapids, Michigan. As he walked to his assigned seat, he noticed a young Corporal sitting in first class wearing his dress Army green uniform. Major Rooney wondered how the Corporal could afford to ride in first class. When the plane landed, the pilot made an announcement that there was an “American Hero” on the plane. He went on to say that the plane was carrying the remains of a soldier killed in Iraq and his “twin brother,” who had flown to escort his brother’s body home, was sitting in first class. As Major Rooney watched the flag-draped coffin escorted from the plane, he saw the soldier’s young son walking sadly, yet proudly, behind his father’s coffin. At that moment, he knew that God had given him a message that he needed to do something to help those families. Thus the Folds of Honor Foundation was born. About the Folds of Honor Logo
In the folded flag we see the heavy price of freedom—yet it is also a symbol of hope, representing the enduring ideals that make this country a beacon of democracy. Folds of Honor choose this logo because it reflected their mission—to honor the sacrifices of American heroes, while giving hope to the bearers of their legacy. This folded flag is a constant reminder of those who have paid the ultimate price for our freedom. It inspires us to help equip and educate their loved ones in need of our support.

The management and members of Rock Barn Country Club & Spa are very proud to support this most worthy cause by holding a Signature Golf Tournament each year. In September 2017, Rock Barn Country Club & Spa held its very first Folds of Honor Charity Golf Tournament. The outstanding response from our members and guests supported by sponsoring local businesses made this first year’s event one of the best tournaments of the year and set the bar high for future Tournaments.
We believe that our success, in part, was due to everyone—sponsors, players, volunteers, and staff members— believing strongly in the mission of the Folds of Honor Foundation—to provide educational scholarships for the families of our military heroes who return home disabled or in a flag-draped casket. We were united and filled with a patriotic sense of pride in what it means to be an American and thankful for the many sacrifices that have made so that today, we are able to enjoy our freedom.
Our guest speaker for 2017 was Ginger Gilbert, wife of Major Troy Gilbert, an F-16 pilot who lost his life in Iraq. Here is her story of how the Folds of Honor helps families who have made the ultimate sacrifice: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mANH-67gEO0
